How do UV stabilized PC Granules handle long-term outdoor exposure in sunrooms?

Outdoor structural applications, such as sunroom panels and greenhouse glazing, demand materials that can withstand harsh environmental stressors. PC Granules are the gold standard for these projects because of their incredible transparency and "unbreakable" impact resistance. However, untreated polycarbonate can degrade and become brittle when exposed to prolonged sunlight. To solve this, manufacturers add UV stabilizers that absorb harmful radiation, preventing the polymer chains from breaking. This ensures that the panels maintain their clarity and structural strength for over a decade, even in regions with high solar intensity. The material is also significantly lighter than glass, making installation faster and safer for construction crews.

 

Regarding the technical usage of PC Granules, drying is perhaps the most critical step before molding or extrusion. Polycarbonate is highly sensitive to moisture; even a tiny amount of water can cause "hydrolysis" at high temperatures, which permanently weakens the plastic and leaves unsightly streaks. Industry consultants recommend using a desiccant dryer to reach a moisture content of less than 0.02%. Recently, there has been significant news regarding the raw material bisphenol A, with manufacturers developing newer, high-purity grades to satisfy health-conscious markets. Despite these shifts, the fundamental mechanical properties of the resin continue to make it the top choice for safety goggles, automotive headlamps, and durable outdoor enclosures.
